CONSULTING Work with hospitals, medical schools, national health organizations, pharmaceutical firms, and public relations agencies to create:
For 20 years, in advance of annual scientific sessions, I have read the 2000+ abstracts, selected the most interesting topics, interviewed the physician/scientist authors, written “Clues to the News” and news releases, and fielded media questions. Selected releases for 2006 included:
Best Practice is a network of 60+ internationally known thought leaders in the CNS field. The firm offers opinion leadership/advice, public policy analysis, drug development project management, and other services to pharmaceutical/biotech companies, managed care organizations, and the NIH. I have been retained on projects to review two- to three-day conference transcripts and produce consensus reports. One has already formed the basis for an article in a leading academic journal, and credit is given at the end of the acknowledgements. (Jensen PS, Youngstrom EA, Steiner H, et al. Consensus report on impulsive aggression as a symptom across diagnostic categories in child psychiatry: implications for medication studies. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry. 2007 Mar;46(3):309-22.) Another on treatment options for the elderly with dementia-related behavioral symptoms, is also leading to a journal paper. Alliance for Lupus Research Second only to the NIH in grants to lupus research, ALR is known for translating complex, leading-edge research into language people with lupus can understand without diluting the essence of the science. I wrote their Lupus Research Update newsletter, lay summaries of their portfolio of funded research grants, and consulted on other communications materials. Group for Research and Assessment on Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA)GRAPPA is an international group of rheumatologists and dermatologists. One project was development of a supplement to Annals of Rheumatic Diseases, a leading academic journal. I worked with them to develop the table of contents, coordinated peer review, and edited the 31 articles, ranging from pathophysiology through clinical management. Published in March 2005 (hard copy and online), my work is credited at the end of the Prologue. Hospital for Special SurgeryI helped the Rheumatology Division create www.HSS.edu/Rheumatology.asp — a website for physicians and patients, and served as Patient and Professional Education Editor. Work included in-depth disease overviews, expert interviews, CME grand rounds. I edited all articles, ghosted selected articles by physicians and, under my byline, wrote service articles for patients and all summaries of workshops for patients.
"Clinical Scenarios in Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Medicine" was a case-based CME. I worked with the faculty to develop the program concept, edited the four workshop cases and wrote the supporting syllabus materials. The program was supported by an educational grant from Merck & Co. Lenox Hill HospitalFrom angina to osteoporosis to West Nile Fever, I wrote most of the Health Topics covered on Lenox Hill Hospital's website and in the audio tapes on Tel-Med, their former free telephone-health information service. I was also a long-term contributor to two newsletters, In Your Health and Wellness Works for Seniors. George Washington University/National Institutes of HealthFor the groundbreaking Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), I developed a nationwide patient recruitment program, creating for the first time many of the recruitment techniques now widely used. My innovative program included: national TV PSAs with Diane Wiest; local radio PSAs; national and local news releases; personal coaching for physicians prior to media interviews; and bi-monthly training packages for 22 clinical coordinators, which included guidelines and sample materials for outreach to community organizations, ads, article placement, etc. While DCCT results changed how diabetes patients were treated, my program changed how patients are recruited for clinical trials Selected Clients National Health OrganizationsAmerican Cancer Society: brochures and book contributor American Lyme Disease Foundation: monograph for physicians Arthritis Foundation: brochures and book author National Institutes of Health: patient recruitment and PR for DCCT National Kidney Foundation: white paper on paying kidney donors Medical Schools/Hospitals Beth Israel Medical Center: annual reports (research sections) Mount Sinai Medical Center: annual reports (research sections) New York-Presbyterian Hospital: booklets on neuroscience and CVD New York University Medical Center: articles for newsletter and Associated Press University of Pittsburgh Medical Center: coaching young physician on rewriting journal paper Washington University School of Medicine: patient recruitment and PR for ONTT Pharmaceutical Firms/Agencies CCG Multimedia: health care client proposals Chamberlain Healthcare PR: Novartis - Lotrel brochure; SWOT for diabetes client solicitation Endo Laboratories: Symmetrel product launch media materials and Dear Doctor letters Health Education Technologies: Burroughs Welcome - Wellbutrin CME program/slide show Kasman Associates: Pfizer - Pfipharmecs Executive Leadership Journal Ketchum Public Relations: Takeda media materials Medicus/Interscience: boehringer Mannheim - AccuCheck newsletter, Lilly - program planning Manning Selvage and Lee: Allergan - Azelex product launch press kit, Elomite newsletter nowPharma Ogilvy PR Worldwide: Novartis - news releases on Starlix; Merck - Zocor seminar development for diabetes educators Other Clients Home Vision Therapy: Newsletter writing and website editing Isabella Geriatric Center: Annual reports, newsletters, news releases, educational brochures New York Association of Homes & Services for the Aging: newsletter articles |
